Location:  Bangor

Client:  Choice Housing Association

Situated on the outskirts of Bangor, County Down the scheme provides 106 social housing units for Choice Housing Association (formerly Oaklee Housing Association). The greenfield site straddled the edge of the development limit and the wider open countryside, the design response was to create a “sub-rural” character to the development based on small “clachan” or farmyard grouping of dwellings around informal communal courtyards.

Design

The development site was split into three distinct zones linked by a sweeping spine which culminates in an open play area. This “village green” defined by a crescent arrangement of dwellings off of which are the more informed clustered arrangements.

The homes are generally two storey with white render, slated roofs, hardwood windows and brightly painted wooden doors. The architectural style is that of simple, unadorned forms commonly seen in the adjacent countryside and occasional use of 3 storey house with a softly curving corner denote key corners into the clusters.

The final phase of the scheme is due to be handed over in February 2018.
