RMI won a design competition in 2013 to develop the site at Comber Road, Newtownards into 56No Social Housing units including general needs houses, wheelchair bungalows and wheelchair apartments. The site, formally occupied by a carpet factory, is relatively flat with mature trees defining its boundary.
Cost: 1m - 10m
The site benefits from a significant frontage onto Comber Road and Circular Road. The concept layout addresses this through the development of dual aspect blocks creating active frontages along Comber Road while active gable ends have been developed to address Circular Road. Careful consideration of internal road layouts and landscape zones helps to soften the impact along these important site features.
The detailing of houses and the materials pallette have been kept simple with a blue brick band around the bases, white self coloured rendered elevations and slate roofs. Timber framed doors and windows achieve high levels of insulation while the door canopy and infill panel between windows at first floor level provide a contemporary feel to the development.
